Group Discussion

In the group discussion I got amazing feedback about my project.  We talked about how to make my idea come to life, what shots, and angles would be best for my idea.  I also had problems with picking a filming location and they gave me some good options.

While looking at my groups blogs I saw many of them had mood boards.  This inspired me to make some mood boards of my own.

In the meeting I said that I am not a strong editor, and they gave me good tips on how to become a good editor.  We talked about this useful effect called color grading.  Color Grading is saturation and brightness of color to fit the mood and theme of the film.

We also talked about how you should create something that you are familiar with.  I am not familiar with my subject since I am not a crime boss or a FBI agent, but I do like watching these types of films.  I feel that I know a good amount about the subject of the film, but it will still be a challenge to make the film to the best it could possibly be.

Mood Board

This is my mood board for the protagonist.  He is a well-dressed man with a dull color palate.  He is not impulsive he plans all of his actions. He has all the money in the world from his life of crime.  He is a natural born leader and people tend to follow him.

This is the mood board for the main side character of the film.  He is the FBI agent in charge of catching the protagonist.  He is a physically fit male that dresses nicely.  He is a calculated person who hates the protagonist.  He likes to take notes of everything and keeps a journal that he writes in every day.  He is a controlling person and always has to be the boss.

Storyboard

Storyboards are an important part of the planning process of the project.  Storyboards help you organize your thoughts and shots.  In my storyboard the opening starts off with a close up the protagonist wanted poster. Then the FBI is giving a briefing on the protagonist.  Then it cuts to the protagonist walking down the street and the same wanted paper is on the pole they are walking by.  The shot zooms into the wanted poster and transitions to the FBI finishing up the briefing.  The shot cuts to the protagonist on the beach talking about how he is going to miss the beach.  Then it cuts to the protagonist sitting outside the FBI headquarters.  It cuts to the FBI saying how dangerous the protagonist.  Then the protagonist walks over to the door to turn himself in.  After the tittle it cuts to the FBI agent pinning the protagonist down.

Some things might change, but this is the general idea of the opening.

This is our schedule for the project. Schedules make sure everything that needs to be done is done on time. It is always good for your schedule to be flexible, just in case something we can't control happens. Schedules keep everything organized and I will always recommend to have and follow your schedule.

Right now in we are in week 3 and we are creating the storyboard and script. We are also still researching shots and angles that will fit the theme of the project. We plan to zoom into a wanted poster and zoom out if it to show a different setting. This would be a good shot for transition scenes. This would be Parallel Editing, which is used to cut from one action sequence to another in different locations and it infers that the action is happening at the same time. This will hint the both the scenes will eventually meet.

The Silence of the Lambs have a perfect example of parallel editing. During the FBI raid scene Clarice is at a house where she thinks she has a lead on Buffalo Bill, while the FBI think they are raiding Buffalo Bills house. The use of parallel editing adds suspense. The viewer does not know if the FBI is at the right house or if Clarice is going into a trap. All the viewer knows is that the events are happening at the same time.

Technology

Adobe Premiere pro is the editing software I will be using.  Adobe Premiere pro is a reliable editing software that has all the features to create a good film opening.

I don't have a lot of experience with Premier pro, but I have watched a couple of videos of the basics.

                                                           https://youtu.be/ONJWql7r3D0

This video was very helpful.  It taught me the basics of editing with Premiere pro.  It showed me how to use basic effects like color contrast and audio effects.  This video also showed me how to import and export data.  The video gave a few examples on how you could transition from shot to shot.  Overall, this is a great tutorial on Premiere pro, it teaches you all the basics.

For the filming I will be using an iPhone.  The iPhone is a great filming device and has all the tools you need to film an amazing opening scene.

Fonts and Theme

The target audience is going to be males that are 13 to 35 years old, in low to middle class.  The theme I want the opening to represent is redemption.  The main character is going to try to make up for what happened in his past.

This is the font we will be using for the subtitles and title of the film opening.  It is a bold font that stands out.  The text will always be very readable.  This font will grab the audiences attention.  The fonts is an important part of the film because it could set the mood of the film.  It also build recognition for the film.

Plot and Characters

The plot of the film would be a wanted man turning himself in because his "business" is getting of over run.  In the opening the viewer wont know what happened or any details, but we will show some of the events on the news with a brief description of what happened.  Giving the viewer enough to know what happened, but not specific details will keep them engaged and wanting to know what happened.

The main character will be sophisticated and intelligent.  He will be a strong person and a good leader.  In the opening you will see that his subordinates respect and follow him.  In the public eye he is a villain, but during the opening you could tell that he is misunderstood and is not that bad of a person.  In the shots we won't show his full face to create a sense of mystery.

The major side character will be a FBI director.  He will have a past with the main character and wants to catch him to find out what happened.  He will be a serious character with a strong sense of morals.  He will also be a strong and intelligent person.

Research

Action films progresses mostly through visuals instead of dialogue.  In the project I am going to use the shots to progress the story rather than dialogue.  Usually in action films the openings are fight scenes, but I want to build the character and introduce him in the opening.  I also want to create a sense of mystery to the character.  This will keep the viewer engaged because they will ask questions like is he a good or bad guy?  What are his motives?  Why would he do that?  In the opening I want the tone of the film to be clear.

This is the opening scene of blacklist a Tv series on Netflix.  In this opening there is a mysterious nature to the character Raymond Reddington.  When watching the opening you are engaging yourselves with questions like the ones above.  Without any dialogue you know what is happening through the mise en scene and shots.

Initial plans, approach to project

I have learned a lot of things in the past months about creating film.  I plan to approach the project with creativity and a willingness to try new things.  I am still figuring out the idea of my project, but I think I want to use the action genre.  I am using this genre because I watch mostly action movies.  I have many good ideas, but it is hard for me to put it into reality. In this project I am going to overcome this obstacle.

I am working on making my schedule of when everything will be done.  The schedule will include filming, editing, and storyboarding.  I am going to focus more on being more organized to create the best project possible.

Music Marketing Project

During the brainstorming and planning part of the assignment we started with a schedule.  The schedule includes when our research should be done, the time we are filming, and when our presentation should be done. It was important to have this schedule because it gave structure to the project and a sense of priority to parts of the assignment like the presentation and music video.  Having a schedule also helps with using all of your time wisely.

Some challenges we faced in the brainstorming and planning part of the project were when to film and coming up with ideas for the music videos.  For the filming time it was hard to plan because after filming you need time to edit and before filming everyone needs to be on board with an idea.  You need to find the perfect day to film because if you schedule it to early then the idea won't be as good, but if you schedule it too late then the editing won't be as good.

To help us with the brainstorming part we did a story board for the music video and a research chart for our presentation.  The story board helped us by giving us a visual of what our shots should look like. The research chart helped us by giving us an understanding of what successful companies and artist do to brand themselves.

The steps after planning and brainstorming are following through on your plan.  Make sure that every day you come in you are hitting your deadlines for when things should be done. This is when you do the music video and presentation.

For the production of the music video, it is essential to focus on the vision that the group had and to ensure that everyone was working together. During the production you have to follow the storyboard, but also be sure to make adjustments to the shots.  For instance, we wanted to film at the stage of TownCenter, but the stage was filled with people during the time we went.  We had to find a new location to shot based on the circumstances.  When you are filming a no budget production you have to be flexible.

Post-production is where you edit, add special effects, and choose which clips to use.  During the post- production we decided which special effects would best develop our brand.  We choose which one of the takes would be best to use.  During the post-production phase of the project the goal is to bring your groups vision to life.

During the presentation we made sure everyone knew which slides they were saying.  To have a good you have to be confident in what you are saying.  If you don't believe what you are saying, then your audience won't be engaged in what you are saying.  We made sure there were not too many words in our presentation.  This enhanced the presentation because we gave a description of the slide, and our slide did not look overloaded.

This project taught me that creating a music video is very challenging.  You have to be flexible when shooting your film because not everything will be in your favor.  This project also taught me that having a plan and schedule is a key part in creating a good project.  I learned that during filming you have to do multiple shots of each part of the scenes.  I found out this project that editing is the most important part of a music video.  Without editing you can't create your vision.  When doing my Cambridge exam, I will use all that I learned during this project to make my final project as best as possible.
